The ancient Chinese legend of the Mandarin Ducks is about an ambitious warlord who was trying to impress a beautiful princess from the neighbouring kingdom. Hoping to gain her hand in marriage and add to his riches and land. The Princesses father - the King was a loving man with great compassion for his daughter but he knew that a marriage with the Warlord would be the best for all of the people in both villages. So he gave his permission for the marriage to the Warlord on the provisor that she truly falls in love with him.
So the Warlord decided to send her a pair of Mandarin Ducks that he requested from the garden of the Empress of Heaven and he sent them with his most trusted General. The entire Royal Family is impressed with the generous gifts and Mandarin Ducks that the Warlord has sent. However, the Princess falls completely in love with the General who was actually her true love. The General too feels the flames of love when he is around the Princess.
The General does not want to betray his friend and leader the Warlord so he tells the Princess that they can not be together and that he will leave and live in a hidden village far away so that her mind can be on her duty as the Queen. The Princess convinces the General that she will get her sister, who was very ambitious and had in fact secretly fallen in love with the Warlord, to marry him instead to keep the peace and she would relinquish her title.
So the Princesses sister married the Warlord which brought peace to the land and happiness to the people. The Princess and the General moved to the hidden village where they lived out the rest of their lives with their true love. Buddha thought that they behaved so honourably that he decided to dress the Mandarin Ducks to symbolize each of them. That is why the Ducks have the beautiful purple breast with white bans to look like the Generals uniform and the white crescents above their eyes and bright red beak just like that of the Princesses make up. He also gave them the ability to stop living if they were ever separated from their partner so that they would not have to roam the earth sad and alone. That is why if the pair of ducks are separated that the other will surely die of loneliness.

What to do with your Mandarin Ducks.
The Mandarin Ducks should be kept together; normally they come with a lily pad, cushion or nest so that they can sit on it together. They should always be placed together and facing each other. If you have problems placing them together on the pad they come with you may need to use glue or Blu-tack. They are made from different materials, wood, glass, crystal or fabric.
